Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install steghide on Kali Linux.
What is steghide
steghide is:
Steghide is steganography program which hides bits of a data file
in some of the least significant bits of another file in such a way
that the existence of the data file is not visible and cannot be proven.
Steghide is designed to be portable and configurable and features hiding
data in bmp, jpeg, wav and au files, blowfish encryption, MD5 hashing of
passphrases to blowfish keys, and pseudo-random distribution of hidden bits
in the container data.
Steghide is useful in digital forensics investigations.
There are three methods to install steghide on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install steghide Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get updateAfter updating apt database, We can install steghide using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install steghideInstall steghide Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install steghide using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install steghideInstall steghide Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install steghide using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install steghideHow To Uninstall steghide on Kali Linux
To uninstall only the steghide package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove steghideUninstall steghide And Its Dependencies
To uninstall steghide and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove steghideRemove steghide Configurations and Data
To remove steghide configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge steghideRemove steghide configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove steghide configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge steghideDependencies
