Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install ifplugd
on Ubuntu 22.04.
What is ifplugd
ifplugd is:
ifplugd is a daemon which will automatically configure your ethernet device
when a cable is plugged in and automatically de-configure it if the cable is
pulled out. This is useful on laptops with onboard network adapters, since it
will only configure the interface when a cable is really connected. Features
include:
- syslog support
- Multiple ethernet interface support
- Uses Debian’s native ifup/ifdown programs
- Small executable size and memory footprint
- Option to beep when the cable is unplugged or plugged
- Option to beep when the interface configuration succeeds or fails
- Can be configured to ignore short unplugged or plugged periods
- Configure WLAN devices (on detecting a successful association to an AP)
- Supports SIOCETHTOOL, SIOCGMIIREG and SIOCDEVPRIVATE for getting link status
- Compatibility mode for network devices which do not support cable detection
There are three methods to install ifplugd
on Ubuntu 22.04. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install ifplugd Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install ifplugd
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install ifplugd
Install ifplugd Using apt
Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install ifplugd
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install ifplugd
Install ifplugd Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install ifplugd
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install ifplugd
How To Uninstall ifplugd on Ubuntu 22.04
To uninstall only the ifplugd
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove ifplugd
Uninstall ifplugd And Its Dependencies
To uninstall ifplugd
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 22.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove ifplugd
Remove ifplugd Configurations and Data
To remove ifplugd
configuration and data from Ubuntu 22.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge ifplugd
Remove ifplugd configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove ifplugd
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge ifplugd
