Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install exim4-dev
on Ubuntu 22.04.
What is exim4-dev
exim4-dev is:
Exim (v4) is a mail transport agent. This package contains header
files that can be used to compile code that is then dynamically linked
to exim’s local_scan interface.
The Debian exim4 packages have their own web page,
http://wiki.debian.org/PkgExim4. There is also a Debian-specific
FAQ list. Information about the way the Debian packages are
configured can be found in
/usr/share/doc/exim4-base/README.Debian.gz, which additionally contains
information about the way the Debian binary packages are built. The
very extensive upstream documentation is shipped in
/usr/share/doc/exim4-base/spec.txt.gz. To repeat the debconf-driven
configuration process in a standard setup, invoke dpkg-reconfigure
exim4-config. There is a Debian-centered mailing list,

questions there, and only write to the upstream exim-users mailing
list if you are sure that your question is not Debian-specific. You

There are three methods to install exim4-dev
on Ubuntu 22.04. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install exim4-dev Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install exim4-dev
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install exim4-dev
Install exim4-dev Using apt
Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install exim4-dev
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install exim4-dev
Install exim4-dev Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install exim4-dev
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install exim4-dev
How To Uninstall exim4-dev on Ubuntu 22.04
To uninstall only the exim4-dev
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove exim4-dev
Uninstall exim4-dev And Its Dependencies
To uninstall exim4-dev
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 22.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove exim4-dev
Remove exim4-dev Configurations and Data
To remove exim4-dev
configuration and data from Ubuntu 22.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge exim4-dev
Remove exim4-dev configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove exim4-dev
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge exim4-dev
