In this tutorial we learn how to install fakeroot-ng
on Ubuntu 22.04.
What is fakeroot-ng
fakeroot-ng is:
This is a clean reimplementation of the fakeroot command. Just like it,
anything run within the fake root command will assume it is running as root.
Unlike it, fakeroot-ng is not based on LD_PRELOAD but on ptrace.
The practical upshot of this is that the technology supports intercepting the
“open†system call. In particular, this allows simulating the “chroot†command
reliably.
Another important difference is that fakeroot-ng can fool applications that do
not perform system calls through glibc, such as statically linked executables
and programs written in some non-C languages (like the latest Sun JDK).
There are three methods to install fakeroot-ng
on Ubuntu 22.04. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install fakeroot-ng Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install fakeroot-ng
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install fakeroot-ng
Install fakeroot-ng Using apt
Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install fakeroot-ng
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install fakeroot-ng
Install fakeroot-ng Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install fakeroot-ng
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install fakeroot-ng
How To Uninstall fakeroot-ng on Ubuntu 22.04
To uninstall only the fakeroot-ng
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove fakeroot-ng
Uninstall fakeroot-ng And Its Dependencies
To uninstall fakeroot-ng
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 22.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove fakeroot-ng
Remove fakeroot-ng Configurations and Data
To remove fakeroot-ng
configuration and data from Ubuntu 22.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge fakeroot-ng
Remove fakeroot-ng configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove fakeroot-ng
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge fakeroot-ng
