Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install apt-transport-tor on Kali Linux.
What is apt-transport-tor
apt-transport-tor is:
Provides support in APT for downloading packages anonymously via the Tor
network.
APT already includes mechanisms for guaranteeing the authenticity of the
packages you download. However, an adversary sniffing your network traffic
can still see what software you are installing.
Install apt-transport-tor, edit your sources.list to include only tor://
URLs, and you can make it very difficult for anyone intercepting your
network traffic to be able to tell that you are installing Debian packages,
or which packages you are installing.
Please note that this approach is only as secure as Tor itself – this
software cannot protect you from an attacker who has access to your local
machine. In addition, attackers may be able to correlate your network
traffic with the packets coming out of an exit node, so do be careful.
There are three methods to install apt-transport-tor on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install apt-transport-tor Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get updateAfter updating apt database, We can install apt-transport-tor using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install apt-transport-tor
Install apt-transport-tor Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt updateAfter updating apt database, We can install apt-transport-tor using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install apt-transport-torInstall apt-transport-tor Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude updateAfter updating apt database, We can install apt-transport-tor using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install apt-transport-torHow To Uninstall apt-transport-tor on Kali Linux
To uninstall only the apt-transport-tor package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove apt-transport-torUninstall apt-transport-tor And Its Dependencies
To uninstall apt-transport-tor and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove apt-transport-torRemove apt-transport-tor Configurations and Data
To remove apt-transport-tor configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge apt-transport-torRemove apt-transport-tor configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove apt-transport-tor configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge apt-transport-tor
