What is devilspie2
devilspie2 is:
Devilspie2 is a window matching utility, allowing the user to perform
scripted actions on windows as they are created. For example, you can
script a terminal program to always be positioned at a specific screen
position, or automatically position a window on a specific workspace.
It is a continuation of Ross Burton’s project Devilspie, with the most
significant change that the symbolic expressions of that project are
replaced with a Lua interpreter.
There are three methods to install devilspie2
on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install devilspie2 Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install devilspie2
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install devilspie2

using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install devilspie2
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install devilspie2
Install devilspie2 Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install devilspie2
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install devilspie2
How To Uninstall devilspie2 on Kali Linux
To uninstall only the devilspie2
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove devilspie2
Uninstall devilspie2 And Its Dependencies
To uninstall devilspie2
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove devilspie2
Remove devilspie2 Configurations and Data
To remove devilspie2
configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge devilspie2
Remove devilspie2 configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
