Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install 389-ds
on Kali Linux.
What is 389-ds
389-ds is:
Based on the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), the 389
Directory Server is designed to manage large directories of users and
resources robustly and scalably.

This is a metapackage depending on the LDAPv3 server and a Cockpit UI plugin
for administration.
There are three methods to install 389-ds
on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install 389-ds Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install 389-ds
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install 389-ds
Install 389-ds Using apt
Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install 389-ds
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install 389-ds
Install 389-ds Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install 389-ds
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install 389-ds
How To Uninstall 389-ds on Kali Linux
To uninstall only the 389-ds
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove 389-ds
Uninstall 389-ds And Its Dependencies
To uninstall 389-ds
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove 389-ds
Remove 389-ds Configurations and Data
To remove 389-ds
configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge 389-ds
Remove 389-ds configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove 389-ds
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge 389-ds
