Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install herbstluftwm on Ubuntu 22.04.
What is herbstluftwm
herbstluftwm is:
In herbstluftwm the layout is based on splitting frames into
subframes which can be split again or can be filled with windows,
Tags (or workspaces or virtual desktops or …) can be added/removed
at runtime. Each tag contains an own layout and exactly one tag is
viewed on each monitor. The tags are monitor independent.
It is configured at runtime via ipc calls from herbstclient. So the
configuration file is just a script which is run on startup.
There are three methods to install herbstluftwm on Ubuntu 22.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install herbstluftwm Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install herbstluftwm using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install herbstluftwm
Install herbstluftwm Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install herbstluftwm using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install herbstluftwm
Install herbstluftwm Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install herbstluftwm using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install herbstluftwm
How To Uninstall herbstluftwm on Ubuntu 22.04
To uninstall only the herbstluftwm package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove herbstluftwm
Uninstall herbstluftwm And Its Dependencies
To uninstall herbstluftwm and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 22.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove herbstluftwm
Remove herbstluftwm Configurations and Data
To remove herbstluftwm configuration and data from Ubuntu 22.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge herbstluftwm
Remove herbstluftwm configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove herbstluftwm configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge herbstluftwm
