What is icinga2

icinga2 is:

Icinga 2 is a general-purpose monitoring application to fit the needs of
any size of network. Icinga 1.x was a Nagios fork; this new generation
has been rewritten from scratch in C++, with multi-threading and cluster
support.

Features:

  • all standard features of Icinga and Nagios;
  • much faster and more scalable than Icinga 1 and Nagios;
  • new, more intuitive, template-based configuration format;
  • monitoring services on ICMP (ping) or TCP ports (HTTP, NNTP, POP3,
    SMTP, etc.) by executing checks (see monitoring-plugins*);
  • any small script following the Nagios plugin API can be used as a
    check plugin;
  • notifications about alerts for any custom script (with examples);
  • native support for Livestatus and Graphite.

This is the metapackage to install all Icinga 2 features.

There are three methods to install icinga2 on Ubuntu 22.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install icinga2 Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install icinga2 using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install icinga2

Install icinga2 Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install icinga2 using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install icinga2

Install icinga2 Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install icinga2 using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install icinga2

How To Uninstall icinga2 on Ubuntu 22.04

To uninstall only the icinga2 package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove icinga2

Uninstall icinga2 And Its Dependencies

To uninstall icinga2 and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 22.04, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove icinga2

Remove icinga2 Configurations and Data

To remove icinga2 configuration and data from Ubuntu 22.04 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge icinga2

Remove icinga2 configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove icinga2 configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge icinga2
