In this tutorial we learn how to install libfaiss-dev on Ubuntu 22.04.
What is libfaiss-dev
libfaiss-dev is:
Faiss is a library for efficient similarity search and clustering of dense
vectors. It contains algorithms that search in sets of vectors of any size, up
to ones that possibly do not fit in RAM. It also contains supporting code for
evaluation and parameter tuning. Faiss is written in C++ with complete wrappers
for Python/numpy. Some of the most useful algorithms are implemented on the
GPU. It is developed by Facebook AI Research.
This package contains the CPU-only version of the development files.
There are three methods to install libfaiss-dev on Ubuntu 22.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install libfaiss-dev Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install libfaiss-dev using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install libfaiss-dev

Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install libfaiss-dev using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install libfaiss-dev
Install libfaiss-dev Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install libfaiss-dev using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install libfaiss-dev
How To Uninstall libfaiss-dev on Ubuntu 22.04
To uninstall only the libfaiss-dev package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove libfaiss-dev
Uninstall libfaiss-dev And Its Dependencies
To uninstall libfaiss-dev and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 22.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove libfaiss-dev
Remove libfaiss-dev Configurations and Data
To remove libfaiss-dev configuration and data from Ubuntu 22.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge libfaiss-dev
Remove libfaiss-dev configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove libfaiss-dev configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge libfaiss-dev
