How To Install socat on CentOS 8

In this tutorial we learn how to install socat on CentOS 8.

What is socat

Socat is a relay for bidirectional data transfer between two independent data channels. Each of these data channels may be a file, pipe, device (serial line etc. or a pseudo terminal), a socket (UNIX, IP4, IP6 – raw, UDP, TCP), an SSL socket, proxy CONNECT connection, a file descriptor (stdin etc.), the GNU line editor (readline), a program, or a combination of two of these.

We can use yum or dnf to install socat on CentOS 8. In this tutorial we discuss both methods but you only need to choose one of method to install socat.

Install socat on CentOS 8 Using dnf

Update yum database with dnf using the following command.

sudo dnf makecache --refresh

The output should look something like this:

Metadata cache created.

After updating yum database, We can install socat using dnf by running the following command:

sudo dnf -y install socat

Install socat on CentOS 8 Using yum

After updating yum database, We can install socat using yum by running the following command:

sudo yum -y install socat

How To Uninstall socat on CentOS 8

To uninstall only the socat package we can use the following command:

sudo dnf remove socat
