Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install speedtest-cli on Kali Linux.
What is speedtest-cli
speedtest-cli is:
Speedtest.net is a webservice that allows you to test your broadband
connection by downloading a file from one of many Speedtest.net
servers from around the world.
This utility allows you to use the Speedtest.net service from the
command line.
Note: This tool accesses speedtest.net over http, while the web-based client
uses websockets. This tool has shown to become increasingly inacurate with

There are three methods to install speedtest-cli on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install speedtest-cli Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get updateAfter updating apt database, We can install speedtest-cli using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install speedtest-cliInstall speedtest-cli Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt updateAfter updating apt database, We can install speedtest-cli using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install speedtest-cliInstall speedtest-cli Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install speedtest-cli using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install speedtest-cliHow To Uninstall speedtest-cli on Kali Linux
To uninstall only the speedtest-cli package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove speedtest-cliUninstall speedtest-cli And Its Dependencies
To uninstall speedtest-cli and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove speedtest-cliRemove speedtest-cli Configurations and Data
To remove speedtest-cli configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge speedtest-cliRemove speedtest-cli configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove speedtest-cli configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge speedtest-cliDependencies
