Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install suckless-tools
on Kali Linux.
What is suckless-tools
suckless-tools is:
This package provides simple commands designed to be used with a minimalistic
window manager like dwm but they can be useful in scripts regardless of the
window manager used.
- dmenu: Dynamic menu is a generic menu for X.
- lsw: Lists the titles of all running X windows to stdout, similar to ls(1).
- slock: Simple X display locker that locks the X session.
- sprop: Sets or gets X window properties.
- sselp: Simple X selection printer that prints the X selection to stdout.
- ssid: Simple setsid replacement.
- swarp: Simple X warping tool to warp the mouse pointer to a given position.
- tabbed: Simple generic tabbed fronted to xembed aware applications.
- wmname: Prints/sets the window manager name property of the root
window similar to how hostname(1) behaves. - xssstate: Retrieves the state of X screensaver.
There are three methods to install suckless-tools
on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install suckless-tools Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install suckless-tools
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install suckless-tools
Install suckless-tools Using apt
Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install suckless-tools
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install suckless-tools
Install suckless-tools Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install suckless-tools
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install suckless-tools
How To Uninstall suckless-tools on Kali Linux
To uninstall only the suckless-tools
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove suckless-tools
Uninstall suckless-tools And Its Dependencies
To uninstall suckless-tools
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove suckless-tools
Remove suckless-tools Configurations and Data
To remove suckless-tools
configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge suckless-tools
Remove suckless-tools configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove suckless-tools
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge suckless-tools
