Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install aevol
on Ubuntu 20.04.
What is aevol
aevol is:
Aevol is a digital genetics model: populations of digital organisms are
subjected to a process of selection and variation, which creates a
Darwinian dynamics.
By modifying the characteristics of selection (e.g. population size,
type of environment, environmental variations) or variation (e.g.
mutation rates, chromosomal rearrangement rates, types of
rearrangements, horizontal transfer), one can study experimentally the
impact of these parameters on the structure of the evolved organisms.
In particular, since Aevol integrates a precise and realistic model of
the genome, it allows for the study of structural variations of the
genome (e.g. number of genes, synteny, proportion of coding sequences).
The simulation platform comes along with a set of tools for analysing
phylogenies and measuring many characteristics of the organisms and
populations along evolution.
There are three methods to install aevol
on Ubuntu 20.04. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install aevol Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install aevol
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install aevol
Install aevol Using apt
Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install aevol
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install aevol
Install aevol Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install aevol
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install aevol
How To Uninstall aevol on Ubuntu 20.04
To uninstall only the aevol
package we can use the following command:

and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 20.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove aevol
Remove aevol Configurations and Data

configuration and data from Ubuntu 20.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge aevol
Remove aevol configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove aevol
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge aevol
