Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install autogen on Ubuntu 20.04.
What is autogen
autogen is:
AutoGen is a tool designed for generating program files that contain
repetitive text with varied substitutions. This is especially valuable if
there are several blocks of such text that must be kept synchronized.
Included with AutoGen is a tool that virtually eliminates the hassle of
processing options, keeping usage text up to date and so on. This tool
allows you to specify several program attributes, innumerable options and
option attributes, then it produces all the code necessary to parse and
handle the command line and initialization file options.
This package contains the development tools. libopts25-dev contains the
static libraries and header files. libopts25 contains the shared libraries.
autogen-doc contains the PostScript and HTML documentation.
There are three methods to install autogen on Ubuntu 20.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install autogen Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install autogen using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install autogen
Install autogen Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install autogen using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install autogen
Install autogen Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install autogen using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install autogen
How To Uninstall autogen on Ubuntu 20.04
To uninstall only the autogen package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove autogen
Uninstall autogen And Its Dependencies
To uninstall autogen and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 20.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove autogen
Remove autogen Configurations and Data
To remove autogen configuration and data from Ubuntu 20.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge autogen
Remove autogen configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove autogen configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge autogen
