Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install gdal-data
on Ubuntu 20.04.
What is gdal-data
gdal-data is:
GDAL is a translator library for raster geospatial data formats.
As a library, it presents a single abstract data model to the
calling application for all supported formats. The related OGR
library (which lives within the GDAL source tree) provides
a similar capability for simple features vector data.
GDAL supports 40+ popular data formats, including commonly used
ones (GeoTIFF, JPEG, PNG and more) as well as the ones used in
GIS and remote sensing software packages (ERDAS Imagine,
ESRI Arc/Info, ENVI, PCI Geomatics). Also supported many remote
sensing and scientific data distribution formats such as HDF,
EOS FAST, NOAA L1B, NetCDF, FITS.
OGR library supports popular vector formats like ESRI Shapefile,
TIGER data, S57, MapInfo File, DGN, GML and more.
This package contains the GDAL data files.

There are three methods to install gdal-data
on Ubuntu 20.04. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install gdal-data Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install gdal-data
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install gdal-data
Install gdal-data Using apt
Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install gdal-data
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install gdal-data
Install gdal-data Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install gdal-data
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install gdal-data
How To Uninstall gdal-data on Ubuntu 20.04
To uninstall only the gdal-data
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove gdal-data
Uninstall gdal-data And Its Dependencies
To uninstall gdal-data
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 20.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove gdal-data
Remove gdal-data Configurations and Data
To remove gdal-data
configuration and data from Ubuntu 20.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge gdal-data
Remove gdal-data configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove gdal-data
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge gdal-data
