Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install gnome-session
on Ubuntu 20.04.
What is gnome-session
gnome-session is:
The GNOME Session Manager is in charge of starting the core components
of the GNOME desktop, and applications that should be launched at
login time. It also features a way to save and restore currently
running applications.
This package contains the required components for the standard GNOME 3
session, based on the GNOME Shell. It can be started from a display
manager such as GDM, and requires 3D acceleration to work properly.
There are three methods to install gnome-session
on Ubuntu 20.04. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install gnome-session Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install gnome-session
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install gnome-session
Install gnome-session Using apt
Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install gnome-session
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install gnome-session
Install gnome-session Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install gnome-session
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install gnome-session
How To Uninstall gnome-session on Ubuntu 20.04
To uninstall only the gnome-session
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove gnome-session
Uninstall gnome-session And Its Dependencies
To uninstall gnome-session
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 20.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove gnome-session
Remove gnome-session Configurations and Data
To remove gnome-session
configuration and data from Ubuntu 20.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge gnome-session
Remove gnome-session configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove gnome-session
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge gnome-session
